Risks of the biofuel revolution
(Free Market News Network) The gold rush has begun. Ditch oil and buy corn - as much as you can. It's a sure-fire investment. At least that's the message you might have picked up from the headlines in recent months. Soon, we're told, corn crops will be as valuable as black gold.

Deere could get boost from higher tractor sales
(Barron's) Deere shares could benefit from higher sales of tractors, combines and tillers due to a good crop outlook and high gasoline prices, Barron's said in its September 25th edition. Barron's said the good long-term weather forecast would boost the outlook for agricultural crops, such as corn for which Deere's equipment is typically used to harvest.

Grass and sunflowers could help power cars
(Telegraph.co.uk) Cars could be powered from fuel made at least in part out of grass, sunflowers or wheat as the West looks to find an alternative to imported oil. The hunt for material that can be turned into biofuel is intensifying, with crops being planted over the next few months as companies build new refineries that could be ready within three years.

New aircraft fuel could be pie in the sky
(Guardian Unlimited) So now we know: Richard Branson doesn't read the Guardian. On Thursday, it published an extract from my book showing that there are no foreseeable substitutes for aviation fuel (kerosene) that don't currently cause more harm than good. A few hours later, Branson announced that he would be investing £1.6bn in technologies intended to reduce climate change. First among them would be alternative fuels for aircraft.

Trucking group goes for biodiesel
(Daily Telegraph) One of the nation's biggest fuel users, trucking group LinFox, has backed the renewable fuels industry by trialling biodiesel in its fleet. A Fox family spokesman said the transport industry had to be more active in tackling carbon emissions, and biodiesel would play a key part. If Linfox was satisfied with the trial, its fleet would switch to biodiesel blends, which use a mix of palm oil and animal fats blended with diesel.
