State's E85 effort a reality in Arvada
(Bizjournals.com) An Arvada gas station on Thursday became the first to open two new alternative fuel pumps directly because of the efforts of the governor's E85 Coalition. E85 is a blended mixture of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent unleaded gasoline. The gas station now sells E85 as well as biodiesel.

(How can we already be) looking at the end of the age of oil
(Grist Magazine) "In 2004 I hit the road (the rails, usually) to spread the word about the plastic plague, petrocollapse, and the positive future that culture change will present. It was fitting that the nonprofit organization I founded in 1988, Fossil Fuels Policy Action, eventually became known as Culture Change."

EU to extend energy crop aid scheme to all member states
(EastDay.com) The European Commission proposed on Friday expanding subsidies for biofuel crops to encourage the production of renewable energy. Under the proposal, the energy crop aid scheme introduced in 2004 will cover all the European Union (EU) member states. Previously eight countries were excluded.

Government Provides Promotions For Ethanol Users
(CBS2 Chicago) State government is making it a little easier to find alternative fuels in Illinois. The state Department of Transportation announced a new promotional campaign Friday to increase the use of biodiesel and ethanol gasoline by Illinois drivers.

Add invasive species status to list of biofuel concerns
(Mongabay.com) High energy prices over the past couple years have fueled interest in biofuels, which proponents say are less damaging to the environment and provide energy security not afforded by foreign oil and gas imports. Nevertheless, accompanying their rise in visibility, have been concerns over their environmental impact of converting natural vegetation for their production.

Synthetic Diesel Taps Coal
(Wired Blogs) Our reserves of fossil fuel may become much larger soon if the progress in commercializing coal-to -diesel technology continues. Shell digs the technology, and is working with mining company Anglo American on a coal gasification plant in Australia. The companies are in a pilot program that aims to be nearly emission free, which requires capturing the carbon that is burned and safely storing in underground.

Deforestation Diesel
(EcoWorld.com) Such is the moniker applied to biofuel by none other than a commentator for the BBC, in an opinion piece posted today entitled Biofuels: Green Energy or Grim Reaper? We have always been optimistic about the potential of biofuel with a couple of big qualifiers: They do not always offer a positive economic or energy payback, even though in some places - palm oil in Africa, sugar cane in Brazil, their payback in both senses is quite positive.
