Bio Diesel News Saturday September 2nd 2006

Towards a modern agriculture sector
AS expected, the agriculture sector is one of the major beneficiaries in Budget 2007 with an allocation of RM3.6bil. Industry players contacted by StarBiz said the focus on increasing the productivity and efficiency in agriculture-based production and expansion of marketing capacities was mostly an expansion of the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP). Khazanah Nasional Bhd’s wholly owned subsidiary Malaysian Agro Food Corp Bhd (MAFC) chief executive officer Azizi Meor Ngah said Malaysia was seriously moving into a modern, commercial and competitive agriculture sector.

After bio-diesel, PMT buses to go for retro-fitted engines
Pune Municipal Transport was the first to embrace bio-diesel when it converted 100 buses the green way in early July. Now, the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) has awarded the Pune Municipal Corporation a grant of $ 296,000 (Rs 1.37 crore) to go in for retrofitting of its city buses in a bid to improve its local air quality management practices and reduce emissions. This will make Pune the first city to introduce retrofitted engines in its public transport vehicles.

Biodiesel made from plants, fats is 'growth market'
Florida's first Farm to Fuel Summit to promote alternative fuels put biodiesel on center stage Friday during the closing day of the two-day event near Orlando. Industry experts noted that biodiesel is kissing kin to ethanol but growing even faster in terms of production and use nationwide. "It is a huge growth market," said David Shiflett, Southeast regional manager for World Energy Alternatives LLC, the nation's leading biodiesel producer and distributor, based in Chelsea, Mass.

Contractor for Hoquiam biodiesel plant named
When construction begins soon on the $40 million biodiesel plant at the Port of Grays Harbor, the contractor will be a familiar face to Harbor industries. JH Kelly LLC of Longview has been selected as the lead contractor for the project that will produce 100 million gallons of biodiesel annually, and will be the largest in the nation, John Plaza, Seattle Biodiesel’s founder and president, confirmed this week.

Future Energy signs letter of intent for construction
A letter of intent for the design and construction of a proposed biodiesel plant was signed by Future Energy LLC Thursday. The document signals a formal agreement has been reached between the company and Bratney Cos., of Des Moines - the potential general contractor for the project. "This is serious enough, we’ve engaged this firm," said Scott Erickson, project manager for Future Energy LLC. "Hopefully, if everything goes well ... we’ll be able to build a biodiesel plant in Humboldt County." The proposed plant, the first in Humboldt County, would be located southeast of Hardy along State Highway 17 and County Road C-30. Once operational, the facility will have a capacity of 60 million gallons and is expected to employ about 30 people.

Northwood soybean plant adding biodiesel facility
A soybean crushing plant under construction in the northeastern North Dakota town of Northwood is adding a biodiesel plant with help from a $500,000 federal grant. The biodiesel production facility will be owned by Northwood Mills LLC, and will produce about 3 million gallons of the fuel each year, said Grand Forks farmer Paul Sproule, Northwood's founder. "Once we have the physical structure in and done and are making the (soybean) meal and oil, to do the rest for the biodiesel fuel plant is not so much more," Sproule said Friday. "It's three years ... since we started (Northwood). This wasn't even on the radar at the time, but now biodiesel has come to the forefront. It's an exciting time."

National mission on bio-diesel soon
Union Minister for Rural Development Raghuvansh Prasad Singh has said that the Centre would shortly launch the National Mission on bio-diesel. Mr. Singh made the announcement at a memorial lecture organised by the National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD) to commemorate the centenary celebrations of S. K. Dey, the first Union Minister for Community Development, Cooperation and Panchayat Raj here on Friday. He said constant fluctuation in the international oil market had forced the Government to explore ways and means to introduce alternative fuel. Over 5.50 crore hectares of wasteland was available in the country of which 4.50 crore hectares could be taken up for Jatropha cultivation.
